연구진은 이 동형 암호의 원리를 CNN(Convolutional Neural Network) 추론 과정에 성공적으로 적용했습니다.
Innovation in medical technology is advancing primarily through artificial intelligence (AI). In particular, deep learning-based medical image analysis is serving as a key driving force, dramatically improving diagnostic accuracy, reducing misdiagnosis rates, and accelerating the speed of new drug development. However, as these cutting-edge technologies are provided in the form of cloud-based services, they face a fundamental security dilemma. The medical image data of patients held by hospitals or research institutions inherently contains the highest level of sensitive information. There is a constant risk of severe personal data breaches if the data is unencrypted or if mismanagement occurs during the transmission process to external cloud servers for AI analysis. Protecting the sovereignty and privacy of medical data while utilizing the powerful analytical capabilities of AI is the most significant challenge that modern medical IT must solve.
Against this backdrop, this study explored practical methods to ensure that deep learning inference services for medical image analysis do not infringe on privacy. Homomorphic Encryption (HE) technology was introduced as the core solution. Traditional encryption methods required a decryption process to analyze data, and this moment of decryption acted as a vulnerability for data leakage. In contrast, homomorphic encryption is an innovative cryptographic technique that allows mathematical operations (such as addition and multiplication) to be performed on data while it remains in an encrypted state. It is akin to performing calculations on the contents of a locked box without ever opening it.
The research team successfully applied the principles of this homomorphic encryption to the CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) inference process. That is, medical images taken at a hospital are encrypted and then transmitted to a cloud server. The cloud server performs complex inference operations using a deep learning model without directly decrypting this encrypted data. The resulting output also remains in an encrypted state, and the system is designed so that only the hospital that owns the data can ultimately decrypt and view the results.
This approach goes beyond mere theoretical security to guarantee the high level of data privacy required in actual clinical environments. According to the research results, the homomorphic encryption-based inference service proved that it can drastically reduce the risk of data leakage compared to existing security models while maintaining the high accuracy of the CNN model. This is evaluated as a decisive technological breakthrough that can accelerate the adoption of AI-based diagnostic systems while preserving the sensitivity of medical data.
In conclusion, this study presented a solution to simultaneously achieve both 'data privacy and utilization,' which was the biggest stumbling block to the commercialization of medical AI services. The AI diagnostic system utilizing homomorphic encryption technology provides trust to hospitals, research institutions, and patients alike, and is expected to contribute significantly to the qualitative improvement of medical services and the vitalization of the data economy. It possesses the potential to become the standard security architecture for the future era of medical artificial intelligence.
