Nursing is relentless. Shift work, charting, patient education, reports — the tasks never end. For time-strapped nurses, generative AI might feel like a lifeline. But how are nurses actually experiencing this technology?
A research team from Curtin University in Australia conducted a scoping review following the Arksey and O'Malley five-stage framework. They searched five databases for studies published between January 2020 and July 2025, ultimately identifying 20 papers for inclusion. The focus was on nurses' and nursing students' experiences with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) across educational and clinical settings.
The findings revealed that nurses' experiences with GenAI were predominantly positive. Nursing students showed mixed perceptions, though still largely favorable. The research team applied the Theory of Planned Behavior to map the factors underlying attitudinal, normative, and control beliefs — all three proved to be critical determinants of overall experience and intention to use GenAI technologies.
Nurses specifically valued AI for reducing documentation burden, improving information access, and serving as an educational aid. Some nursing students, however, expressed concerns about patient safety, ethical implications, and the risk of over-reliance. Nurse leadership emerged as a pivotal factor. When nurse leaders actively shaped institutional policies and ethical guidelines, both nurses and students demonstrated greater willingness to adopt AI responsibly.
The study underscores that AI integration in nursing is already underway. However, limitations exist: only 20 papers were analyzed, and most relied on self-reported survey data. Long-term studies examining AI's impact on actual patient safety in clinical settings remain scarce.
For nursing professionals and educators, the key takeaway is the need for a structural approach. Rather than leaving AI adoption to individual discretion, institutions should establish clear usage guidelines, incorporate AI literacy into curricula, and teach students to critically evaluate AI outputs. In practice, the principle must be that patient data protection and final clinical decisions remain firmly in human hands.
