Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) offloading promises low-latency computation for wireless devices, but breaks down at cell edges and in environments with blocked propagation paths. Devices unable to maintain strong base station links face dramatically increased offloading latency—the weakest links determine worst-case system performance. Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) offer a hardware-efficient solution to this coverage problem.
Researchers proposed an IRS-assisted cell-free MEC system combining multiple base stations (BSs) and IRS panels to improve the transmission environment for all wireless devices (WDs). The key innovation is framing optimization as a min-max latency problem: minimizing the maximum offloading latency across all WDs, directly targeting worst-case performance rather than average case.
IRS panels dynamically adjust their reflective beamforming coefficients to create favorable propagation paths between BSs and WDs at cell edges or behind obstacles—without the power amplification costs of traditional relays. The system jointly optimizes IRS reflection coefficients, BS transmit beamforming vectors, local-offloading decisions, and computational resource allocation across all devices simultaneously.
The resulting optimization is a challenging non-convex problem addressed through Alternating Optimization combined with Successive Convex Approximation (SCA). Each subproblem is solved iteratively until convergence. Simulations demonstrated over 40% reduction in worst-device offloading latency compared to IRS-free MEC baselines, with the gains most pronounced for devices at coverage boundaries.
The min-max formulation is particularly relevant for IoT deployments where guaranteed latency bounds are required—industrial control, autonomous vehicles, or augmented reality applications where outlier latency is more damaging than average latency.
> Practical takeaway: For MEC deployments with coverage gaps or high user heterogeneity, incorporate IRS-assisted min-max latency optimization. Design IRS placement and beamforming jointly with BS resource allocation to guarantee equitable latency across all served devices.
