International Journal of Scientific Research in Engineering and Management에 발표된 연구는 IoT 기기 급증이 IPv4 주소 체계에 가하는 압력과 IPv6 채택이 인터넷 인프라에 미치는 영향을 분석한다.

Smartphones, smart TVs, IoT sensors, autonomous vehicles—the number of devices connected to the internet is growing exponentially. IPv4 addresses have already been exhausted, and IPv6 must fill the void, but the transition is not easy. Managing the transitional period where the two protocols coexist is a pressing challenge.
A study published in the International Journal of Scientific Research in Engineering and Management analyzes the pressure that the surge in IoT devices places on the IPv4 addressing scheme and the impact of IPv6 adoption on internet infrastructure. The study comprehensively covers the severity of IPv4 exhaustion, the efficiency of IPv6 transition mechanisms, and the challenges of dual-stack operations.
According to the study, the number of internet-connected devices is expected to exceed 75 billion by 2025. Since IPv4 provides approximately 4.3 billion addresses, allocating a single public address per device is impossible. While NAT and CIDR are being used to cope, they are not fundamental solutions. NAT breaks end-to-end connectivity and poses obstacles to P2P services and IoT communication.
Looking at the key findings, the transition to IPv6 has a dual impact on internet infrastructure. On the positive side, a larger address space allows for unique address allocation per device, end-to-end connectivity is restored, and the simplified IPv6 header structure improves routing efficiency. On the negative side, infrastructure complexity increases during dual-stack operations, routing optimization is insufficient due to less IPv6 route information compared to IPv4, and security equipment often has incomplete IPv6 support.
In performance comparisons within dual-stack segments, IPv6 mostly showed latency and throughput equivalent to IPv4. However, in some routes, IPv6 took longer paths, which is because IPv6 peering is not yet sufficiently mature.
The implication of this study is that transitioning to IPv6 is not a choice but a necessity, and infrastructure management during the transition process is key. Minimizing the dual-stack period and quickly transitioning to native IPv6 is the way to reduce infrastructure complexity.
As for limitations, the analysis is primarily based on theoretical models and existing data, meaning new experimental data is limited, and some aspects are confined to specific regions or ISPs.
The transition to IPv6 can no longer be delayed. To begin, first assess the current state of IPv6 support in your internal network. Verifying whether routers, firewalls, load balancers, and applications support IPv6 is the priority. A safe strategy is to start with a dual-stack approach and gradually increase the proportion of IPv6 traffic. Peering negotiations must also be conducted in parallel to optimize IPv6 routing.
