People know that if you "drop an object," it naturally "falls." This common sense is so obvious that no one explicitly teaches it. However, to AI, this common sense is not obvious. Manually inputting such common sense into a knowledge graph is an endless task. So, can AI automatically build a commonsense knowledge graph?
Research presented at the ACL conference comprehensively studies the automatic construction of two representative commonsense knowledge graphs, ATOMIC and ConceptNet, for the first time. It introduces a model called COMET (Commonsense Transformers) and evaluates its ability to automatically generate the rest of the graph even when only a portion of the existing knowledge graph is provided.
The study tested COMET's ability to generate commonsense reasoning for new entities after learning the entities and relations of existing commonsense knowledge graphs. ATOMIC is a graph that structures the causes and effects, motives and reactions of events, while ConceptNet is a graph that structures relations between general concepts. Since the characteristics of the two graphs differ, model variants tailored to each were evaluated.
Looking at the core results, COMET showed a 77% agreement rate with human-written common sense in ATOMIC. For a given event, it generated reasonable and commonsense responses to the question, "What happens next?" In ConceptNet, performance varied significantly depending on the relation type. Relations like "CapableOf" or "UsedFor" showed high accuracy, but abstract relations like "MotivatedByGoal" showed lower accuracy.
The relationship between model size and performance is also interesting. The GPT-2-based COMET demonstrated commonsense reasoning ability even at a small scale, but as the scale increased, the diversity and accuracy of the reasoning improved. However, in human evaluations, about 23% of the responses were still "non-sensical" or "ambiguous."
The significance of this research lies in demonstrating the feasibility of automatically constructing commonsense knowledge. Common sense is essential for AI systems to understand and communicate like humans. While manually coding all common sense is nearly impossible, if models like COMET can reasonably generate new common sense from existing knowledge, the potential for expanding knowledge graphs increases significantly.
Limitations include the fact that verifying the reliability of the generated knowledge still relies on human evaluation, and biases in the training data can be reflected in the generation results. Additionally, it has not yet been applied to other types of common sense, such as visual or physical common sense.
If you are developing an application that utilizes a commonsense knowledge graph, consider COMET as an auxiliary tool. A hybrid approach where COMET generates commonsense candidates at a scale impossible for manual construction, and humans verify them, is the most practical method currently available. It is also recommended to concurrently develop metrics that automatically evaluate the quality of the generated common sense.
