Analyzing wastewater at treatment plants is a daily routine. However, traditional chemical analysis is time-consuming and costly. To maintain optimal treatment processes, it is crucial to quickly assess the wastewater condition, yet in the field, process efficiency often drops while waiting for results.
AI has stepped up to tackle this challenge. A study published in Scientific Reports presents a method using a Neural Architecture Search (NAS)-based AutoML system to automatically quantify wastewater characteristic variables using spectral reflectance data.
The research team used spectral reflectance data generated from the complex biochemical processes in wastewater treatment plants as input. Previously, experts had to manually design the neural network architecture, but this system uses AutoML to automatically search for the optimal network structure. In other words, regardless of the wastewater variable to be predicted, the algorithm finds the optimal model on its own.
Looking at the key results, the AutoML system achieved high prediction accuracy for various wastewater characteristic variables—Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Nitrogen, and Total Phosphorus. Notably, the customized architecture explored through NAS consistently outperformed general-purpose neural network models. The key takeaway is that major water quality indicators of wastewater can be estimated in near real-time using only spectral reflectance data.
The significance of this study is clear. Real-time monitoring has been a long-standing challenge in wastewater treatment plant operations. While traditional chemical analysis takes several hours from sample collection to result generation, AI analysis based on spectral data can produce results almost instantly. When operators can adjust processes in real-time, treatment efficiency increases significantly, and effluent water quality management improves.
Of course, there are limitations. Since the study is confined to laboratory-level data, further validation is needed to determine how robust it is against various environmental changes in actual wastewater treatment plants, such as seasonal factors and sudden contamination. The cost of installing and maintaining spectral sensors in the field could also be a barrier to actual adoption.
To introduce AI-based real-time analysis in wastewater treatment sites, it is practical to start with a pilot project that builds a spectral sensor network and validates it against existing chemical analysis data. Since the AutoML system automatically re-searches models for new wastewater characteristics, it can be expanded and applied to various treatment processes as long as there is sufficient initial data.
