Global Journal of Engineering and Technology Advances에 발표된 연구는 미국 주요 대도시에서 IPv6 채택 수준을 ISP별로 비교 분석한다.

IPv4 addresses have long been exhausted. Yet, the majority of internet connections are still made via IPv4. The transition to IPv6 is the most significant infrastructure change in the history of the internet, but how much progress has actually been made? Looking solely at national averages can be misleading, as there is significant variance depending on the region and ISP.
A study published in the Global Journal of Engineering and Technology Advances comparatively analyzes the level of IPv6 adoption by ISP across major U.S. metropolitan areas. Rather than relying on national statistics, it captures the actual transition status through a granular analysis at the city and ISP level.
The study measured the IPv6 adoption rates of five major ISPs across 10 major U.S. metropolitan areas. The measurement metrics included the IPv6 connection ratio, IPv6 route availability, transition mechanism support, and network performance comparison. Data was collected through accredited measurement platforms and proprietary probes.
Looking at the key results, IPv6 adoption rates showed significant differences depending on the city and ISP. While some ISPs achieved an IPv6 connection ratio of over 70%, others remained below 20%. There was also a large variance among metropolitan areas—tech-centric cities had relatively higher adoption rates, while cities with extensive legacy infrastructure experienced slower transition speeds. IPv6 network performance was equal to or slightly better than IPv4 in most cases, but some ISPs suffered from inadequate IPv6 route optimization, resulting in higher latency.
The importance of this study lies in its detailed illustration of the current state of the IPv6 transition. Even if the national average adoption rate is 50%, a specific ISP or region might only be at 10%. Policymakers and network operators require this level of granular data.
Limitations include the fact that the study is confined to U.S. metropolitan areas, making it difficult to generalize to other countries or rural regions, and it is essentially a snapshot of a specific point in time, failing to reflect time-series changes.
If you are planning an IPv6 transition, first measure the current IPv6 adoption status of your own network. You can check adoption rates by country using Google IPv6 statistics or APNIC data. When selecting an ISP, verify their IPv6 support, and a gradual transition using a dual-stack configuration is recommended. Since IPv6 route optimization may be inadequate, you should strengthen performance monitoring during the initial phase of the transition.
