As 5G networks become a commercial reality, network slicing has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies in telecommunications. By creating purpose-specific virtual networks on top of a single physical infrastructure, network slicing enables autonomous vehicles, remote surgery, and massive IoT deployments to coexist on the same network. But sharing resources also means sharing security risks.
A research team led by Md. Zahirul Islam at the University of Dhaka proposed intent-based networking (IBN) as a solution to this challenge. IBN allows administrators to declare high-level objectives—such as "maintain 99.9% availability for this slice"—and the system automatically generates and enforces the network policies needed to achieve those goals.
In the framework the researchers built, an IBN manager is integrated directly into the network slicing architecture, enabling automated detection and response to cyber threats such as DDoS attacks and ARP spoofing. Experimental evaluation demonstrated meaningful improvements across key performance metrics including availability, packet loss, response time, and CPU and memory utilization.
The implications are significant. In post-5G network environments, security can no longer be a reactive afterthought—it must be automated from the network design stage. The intent-based approach abstracts complex security policies, reducing operational burden while simultaneously increasing response speed.
For organizations operating or planning to deploy 5G infrastructure, the message from this research is clear: move beyond passive security monitoring toward IBN-driven automated security frameworks. As network slicing scales across industries, the ability to automatically detect and neutralize threats across shared virtual infrastructure will become a competitive necessity.
